To Rick

Your blue eyes
Only one hour old
Look at me
In wonder.
And
In wonder
I look back,
“What a beautiful child–
With only me for a mother.”

Oh God, I’ve never been a mother before.
Show me how.

Your blue eyes
Just three years old,
Search my face
Questioningly,
Why did I shake you?
“That’s alright, Mommy,
Everyone makes mistakes,”
You said.

Oh God, I want to teach my child.
Thank you for the times he teaches me.

Your blue eyes
Years later still see
Beneath the surface
Discerningly.
And I
Watch with joy
Your grown-up mind
Your seeing heart.

May God keep your eyes clear,
Focused on Him,
Always seeing more.
